Dropping Strokes With Putting Basics

UK Sports BlogGolf

If you are reading this, you are already on your way to dropping 5 or even 10 strokes from your game. You have already realized that putting is crucial to a good score. putting basics are something that can help any golfer, not just the beginner. The truth is that, in most cases, putting gets very little attention. Most of us spend very little time practicing our putting basics.

Neglecting your putting is a huge mistake. Putting is what makes up most of your score. At least 45% or more. There is no other type of shot that comes close to that. So if you can get your putting basics down, you can drop strokes fast. Remember that putting is key! Read on to see what the putting basics are.

First you want to pick a style. Putting is unique in that most people have their own style. Having said that, there are two mainstays. The first is when you keep the putter in a straight line all the way through. This is a basic technique that works for many people. You want your eyes directly above the ball. You want your wrists, arms, and shoulders to work as one unit. This is the most common of all the putting basics.

There is another style that is very popular. This involves rotating the putter with the natural motion of the wrists. As you bring the putter back it will rotate, and move to the inside. The same on the follow through. It is like a very limited version of a regular Golf swing with an iron. This might be a slightly more advanced technique. It takes more time to perfect, but it is more reliable once it is learned properly.

One of the most important putting basics is the mental aspect of putting. You want to have a pre-putt routine, and you want to picture the perfect putt. This is all give you confidence. Without confidence you will not be a very good putter. Your pre-putt routine should consist of reading the green, a few practice strokes, controlling your breathing, and picturing the putt. Picturing the putt is very important. The mental picture is what will give you a huge advantage. You should picture the putt in as much detail as possible. If you do this, you are already 80% of the way to actually achieving that putt! If it is the only thing you do, you must picture the putt!

Getting you putting basics down is a guaranteed way to a lower score. Simply putting in little time practicing is a huge step in the right direction. So get to practicing, and as you practice, remember the putting basics. Your score will show your work!

A Few Putting Secrets

UK Sports BlogGolf

This article will discuss golf instruction tips for putting.

How frequently have you been frustratingly close to sinking a putt just to come up short?

Or maybe you have only just missed the hole to view your ball go crusing past adding a rediculous amount of length for the return golf putt.

A great deal of games happen to be lost on the putting green and more often than not it has been because of the inaccurate distance, rather than the direction of the ball.

A lot of novices swiftly get a feel for the direction the ball will travel, even on sloping greens.

You’ve perhaps viewed it personally in cases where a newcomer to the golf game places the golf ball within just inches of the golf hole on a sloping green repeatedly.

What we do not witness quite so often will be the ball stopping just a few inches past the golf hole when they miss.

There are several things that will come in to account while identifying the length a ball could travel on the green, to the slope, to the preparation of the green along with whether or not this is wet and slow or dry and fast.

It can have a very big difference with respect to the time of the day with the greens getting faster as they dry off from the afternoon sunshine.

Therefore understanding the distance of a putt is without a doubt precisely what you really should focus on in order to get your ball to go in that hole.

Once more it all comes back again to practice and there is absolutely no better practice than on the day of the tournament in the conditions that you will be playing in.

You should make an effort to have a couple of practice putts just before you start play to be able to ‘dial in’ your length.

One thing you need to always remember; the golf ball will never drop if it does not reach the hole.

May seem way too apparent to even require mentioning doesn’t it, but more often than not putts will come up short.

At all times aim for the rear of the hole so that, provided you have your direction correct, you will have a chance of making the putt.

Remember the old saying: “Drive for show, putt for dough.” It is an old saying because it is true. Be sure and get good golf putting instruction so you can win all the dough.

What A Weekend – Ryder Cup, Davis Cup, Rugby And Football

UK Sports BlogGolf
Americans wind up the crowd

Americans wind up the crowd

First post, and what a weekend to write about. It was sport, sport and then more sport on top just for good measure!

Lets start with the Ryder Cup shall we. I was one of those people who finished work early on Friday to catch the start and I was glued to it over the whole weekend. It was clear early on that Americans were up for this and determined to take back the trophy. I’m sure you can read about it in glorious detail on the BBC website but I’ll just say that in my opinion the moment the Americans got their noses in front it looked like it was all over. There was some hope for the Europeans on the Saturday keeping the gap at 2 points but in the singles the Americans just seemed to have the edge, hitting some very impressive way under par rounds. It was just a shame that the American fans couldn’t win with dignity, by all accounts some of the “baiting” of the European players was appalling although a lot of it must have been lost through the power of TV. Overall a deserved American win, I did feel sorry for Nick Faldo, he looked like he’d taken the whole thing just a little too personally. A special mention has to go to Ian Poulter as well for being the highest scoring individual, in no way shape or form did he deserve to be on the losing side.

So my golf viewing was interrupted over the weekend to watch several other things. On Saturday it was mainly the Davis Cup on BBC1. The doubles match I watched was looking like it was heading for a very early finish with the Austrians trouncing our guys. We did manage a small come back to drag the game out a bit but it was soon over. Andy Murray did well yesterday for us but by that time it was too late and team GB had lost 3-2 to Austria, I think that takes us out of the top 12 now.

I also had time to catch the Help For Heroes rugby match on Saturday afternoon. It was great to see that they went past the 1 million target although I was a little curious to know why they hadn’t made a phone line available? I’m sure many of the people watching would liked to have given money as well? Anyway, the game itself, although a little slow, had plenty of “physicality” and a couple of great tries. I’m not sure where the “friendly” part came in but it was a good watch all the same. It even had big Lawrence Dallaglio drop kicking a conversion! Overall the HFH team beat the World 15 by a comfortable margin.

My football for the weekend was a bit limited. I was flicking to and fro to the Liverpool home game on Saturday. Liverpool looked very unlucky in my eyes. I am getting sick to death of hearing whinging about referees this early in the season. Either they are good enough or they are not, if they are not perhaps sacking them might be an option. If you’re that bad at your job in any other walk of life (well accept the public sector) you’d be “released”. Why not football referees? It’s either that or punish those that do nothing but complain about them. What are we striving for, the perfect robot official or a little bit of humanity in which case mistakes just need to be accepted on the basis that they’ll even themselves out over the season. The same can be said about the Chelsea, Manchester United game which I watched yesterday as well. Both teams could have cause to complain but should they?

Well that was a little longer than I’d planned for my first post but never mind. It was a great weekend of sport, hope you enjoyed it too!

For Crying Out Loud – Leave Him Alone

UK Sports BlogGolf

Now before anyone has a go, although I’m not a boxing fan, I am a Muhammad Ali fan. I think he was not only a great boxer, but a great Showman, and that’s what any sport needs, larger than life showmen who get people talking. What I can’t stand is the way he gets wheeled out all the time now he’s a vegetable. Does he actually know where the “flip” he is? Who is organising these things for him? Surely he just wants to be left alone to die in peace with at least some dignity. Anyway the sight of him being pushed around a golf course and “introduced” to the Ryder Cup teams was too much for the normal stoic Nick Faldo and reduced him to tears. I think it was pity not awe?

Faldo & The Paps

UK Sports BlogGolf

It appears that the Paps have been zooming in on Nick Faldo’s notes on the forth coming Ryder Cup. As far as I can see they just say who will be pairing with who when they play. Errrr, am I missing something? So what? It’s not like team sports where you might use different centres or wingers depending on who the other side is playing to neutralise their threat. This is Golf. You just have to get the ball in the hole. How much “tactics” can there be? So what is the point of this story?

And on a slightly related note, the golf WAGS. I hate footballers, but at least they get the totty. Here we get a look in to the glamorous world of Golf Players WAGS… Now most Golfers are renowned for their “Full Seated” physic, it appears most of their wives follow suit, i.e. Katie Poulter. Even the rest are only OK at best.

Why I Hate Golf(ers)

UK Sports BlogGolf

The Ryder Cup starts on Friday, the most talented golfers from America and Europe slog it out over 3 days of intense golfing action. Or to put it another way a group of check wearing saddos walk around at the pace of a slug whilst shouting at the poor sods that have to do all the work i.e. carrying the clubs.

I hate golf, there is no disguising it. You’ve all heard the quotes about it being a waste of a good walk but I don’t think it’s a good walk either. Golf courses are built in such a way that they destroy the natural landscape and are nothing but big lawns. Barron of anything interesting that would make a walk good. Then there is the whole handicap system, nice name. “I’ve got a handicap of 13 you know”. Well fucking done you! It is the only time in life you will see people boasting about being crap. Why don’t people just play against each other without all this head start thing and the best player wins, like a real sport? Do shit teams in football, rugby, cricket get a head start, I think not?

Deep down it’s not really the sport itself that I hate so much, it’s more the people that play it. Middle management wankers who wear their handicap like a badge of honour. I’ve heard of offices where the whole management would disappear on a Friday afternoon to go for a round of golf leaving the secretary to run the business. Not one Friday but every Friday. They probably discussed “contracts” or other really important things on the green. To fit in you have to play golf, not only that but you have to pretend to enjoy it. I tried it once, felt dirty. Never again. Golf is how a lot of business gets done, from football transfers to medical supplies all discussed over the golf course. It’s stopped being a sport and has become a place to socialise, like the pub but without the beer and fun.

And yet there are people who make golf their life. People who have already booked Friday of work so that they can watch all the “action”. People who will pay the extra and endure the wrath of the airlines to transport their golf clubs half way around the world to play on a course that looks just like their local one (mowed grass). People who spend every weekend trying to smack a little white ball around a big mowed lawn with the coordination of a worm and getting annoyed. I just don’t get it.
