England Injury WoesBookmark and Share

UK Sports BlogFootball

Another world cup, another squad selection that seems to ignore something as basic as fitness and form. For all the talk “Big Flav” gave out about having no favourites it seems that what looks to have been a media/pundit influenced squad has backfired again.

Rio Ferdinand was crocked most of the season, I’m not saying that this meant he would get the same injury but surely the laws of physics tell you that if somebody has been injured/rested for so long that the chances of them picking up “some” injury when activity levels increase are high? You can add Ledley King to that list, he’s not used to lots of exercise, fact. Winning an intense tournament like the World Cup is about having a squad, look at the teams that have won the last 3 world cups, it could be easily argued that non of them had the best first 11 in the tournament. How many me will England be down come the qaurter finals (if we make it that far)? By the time the yellow cards have stacked up as well what sort of a team will we be capable of putting out?

Anyhoo, I’m not going to get all down and doom and gloom about this. 1 point against the USA (who are not a bad team at all) was a handy return from the first game and the performance level was very good. I’m just a bit worried about how we’ll get on later on in the tournament if we’re nursing a bunch of crocks after the first week!
