Formula 1
So far in the 2010 Formula 1 season we’ve had 1 really dull race, 1 brilliant race and 1 race that was very good. All in all then 2 races out of the 3 have been very watchable, yet still there are people lining up to take a shot at Formula 1 and I don’t understand why?
I first started watching Formula 1 in the mid eighties although it was probably a couple of years later before I really got into it. My Formula 1 hero’s all come from the Senna, Prost and Mansell era. Great drivers all of them and I can remember dozens of amazing races. What I tend to forget though was all the dull races, it doesn’t take much looking back through the archives to realise that there were in fact plenty of dull Formula 1 Grand Prix back then. And even further back. Excitement in Formula could never and can never be guaranteed, nor should people aim for it.
The one criticism in modern Formula 1 that is heard above all others is the lack of overtaking. Strangely enough there was no shortage of overtaking at Australia this year nor in Malaysia. How many people did Lewis Hamilton overtake on the first lap, was it 8? It’s the drivers that can make Formula 1 exiting, not a new set of rules every year. A driver that wants to put it on the line to overtake will do, if there’s one criticism of modern Formula 1 that should stick it’s the stewards and what they have done to those drivers that want to overtake. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, a fart in the wrong direction seems to be enough to ensure a drive through penalty. It’s this attitude that makes the RISKS of overtaking not worth taking.
Overall then the 2010 Formula 1 season has been a vast improvement over the 2009 season. Despite a shocking first race in Bahrain there is plenty of scope for exciting racing, all that is needed is the drivers to deliver on the track. In that respect Formula 1 has never been any different, it is the drivers that make racing exciting and with the current crop there is huge potential for even more exciting races this year.
